Aragonite |

|
Aragonite is a carbonate mineral, one of the two common, naturally occurring polymorphs of calcium carbonate. The other polymorph is the mineral calcite. Aragonite's crystal lattice differs from that of calcite, resulting in a different crystal shape. Colorless to white or grey, often stained various hues by impurities, such as blue, green, red or violet; colourless in transmitted light. Aragonite may be columnar or fibrous, occasionally in branching stalactitic forms called flos-ferri ("flowers of iron") from their association with the ores at the Carthinian iron mines. The type location for aragonite is Molina de Aragón (Guadalajara, Spain), 25 km outside Aragon. Other locations in the USA, Marocco, Maxico and Namibia. Massive deposits of oolitic aragonite are found on the seabed in the Bahamas. |
